Growing and strengthening west Michigan's middle class
GRAND RAPIDS June 30,2016– The Kent-Ionia Labor Council has announced today that it has endorsed Douglas Smith for Congress. Smith is running against incumbent Congressman Justin Amash in Michigan’s Third Congressional District.
Douglas Smith is the only choice for working people living in Kent and Ionia Counties. He’s not a career politician, he’s not in the pockets of billionaires or corporations, and he’s wholly committed to fighting for economic stability for working families in West Michigan. For the past 17 years, he’s earned a living as a sheet metal worker—a dues-paying member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 7—so he understands the challenges facing working people today.
“As a member of Congress, Doug will put working people first—because he’s one of us,” said KICLC President Sean Egan (IBEW Local 275). “He gets it: Expanding the middle class is good for America. And as a member of Congress, he’ll be committed to fighting for quality healthcare, a living wage, trade policies that protect American workers, workplace safety, and laws that actually strengthen unions.
“For the past five years, Justin Amash has consistently voted against the well-being of working families in West Michigan. From healthcare and minimum wage to workforce training and union organizing—Justin Amash is on the wrong side every single time. And it’s because of politicians like Rep. Amash that wages continue to stagnate, American jobs continue to move overseas, and corporations are able to write our nation’s labor laws.
“We need change in Washington, which is why the Kent-Ionia Labor Council fully endorses Doug Smith for Congress.”
