Growing and strengthening west Michigan's middle class

December food truck serves over 150 families

GRAND RAPIDS December 22, 2015– The West Michigan labor community, partnered with Heart of West Michigan United Way, held its December food truck at the City Life Church in Grand Rapids last week, where 507 people from 152 households received food ahead of the Christmas holiday.

In addition to the produce and baked goods on the Feeding America truck, RWDSU Local 386 also donated 125 hams for distribution.

About the Food Truck Program: Every month, west Michigan labor unions sponsor a Feeding America food truck to distribute 5,000 pounds of produce and baked goods to local families suffering from food insecurity. Union members, retirees and community members then volunteer their time to pass the food out at an area church.

The food is distributed to anyone that shows up, no proof of income or need required. For many struggling families, this serves as a welcome supplement to food they receive from local pantries.

Over the past two years, the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, its partner organizations and volunteers delivered over 125,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need.
