Growing and strengthening west Michigan's middle class
GRAND RAPIDS November 24, 2015– The West Michigan labor community, partnered with Heart of West Michigan United Way, held its November food truck at the New Life Church of God in Christ in Grand Rapids last week, where 316 people from 89 households received food ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Every month, west Michigan labor unions sponsor a Feeding America food truck to distribute 5,000 pounds of produce and baked goods to local families suffering from food insecurity. Union members, retirees and community members then volunteer their time to pass the food out at an area church.
The food is distributed to anyone that shows up, no proof of income or need required. For many struggling families, this serves as a welcome supplement to food they receive from local pantries.
Last year, the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, its partner organizations and volunteers delivered over 64,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need.
Next month’s food truck will take place on December 17 at City Life Church, 574 S Division in Grand Rapids, where in addition to produce and baked goods, we will also be distributing hams. For more information on the food truck program, click here.
