Kent-Ionia Labor raising money for Women’s Resource Center

GRAND RAPIDS November 24, 2015– The Kent-Ionia Labor Council is raising money for the Women’s womenlogo2Resource Center of Grand Rapids this holiday season. The fundraising is being coordinated by the KICLC Women’s Caucus.

The Women’s Resource Center is an amazing organization here in Grand Rapids that helps women prepare for and secure meaningful employment during transitional periods of their lives (post-divorce, post-incarceration, after a job loss, etc.) They have several programs that help women with resumes, interviewing, job training, and more.

“As the Women’s Caucus was discussing a service project earlier this fall, we wanted to find an organization that not only served the community, but empowered the community– especially women,” said wrcflyer-page-001Women’s Caucus Chair Lisa Bennett (OPEIU 277). “The Women’s Resource Center is an amazing organization in that it helps women find work– meaningful work that allows them to take control of their lives again.

“They help women get job training, put together a good resume, they provide mentors, they help women get to interviews by providing gas cards…they even provide professional work attire for women who might not have the money to buy new clothes.”

From the WRC website:

At the heart of everything we do is the goal of economic independence for women, regardless of their current situation. Here is a snapshot of the women we served last year:

  • 648 women who were parenting a total of 592 children
  • Ranged in age from 17 to more than 60 years old
  • 62% percent were single parents
  • 70% earned less than $15,000 per year – not a livable wage for a single person, much less for a family

In addition to being able to make a secure online donation, people interested in donating can send a check to the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, 918 Benjamin NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Checks should be made out to Labor Heritage Society of West Michigan, with “Women” in the memo.

There will also be two fundraising nights at Uccello’s in Rockford (December 10) and the Beltline Bar in Grand Rapids (December 8). Click the links below to print out flyers for the events, bring them to the restaurant on the designated day and 15% of your total bill will be donated to the WRC.
