Growing and strengthening west Michigan's middle class
GRAND RAPIDS October 19, 2015– The West Michigan labor community, partnered with Heart of West Michigan United Way, held its October food truck at the Kent-Ionia Labor Center in Grand Rapids last week, where 86 families received food.
Every month, west Michigan labor unions sponsor a Feeding America food truck to distribute 5,000 pounds of produce and baked goods to local families suffering from food insecurity. Union members, retirees and community members then volunteer their time to pass the food out at an area church.
The food is distributed to anyone that shows up, no proof of income or need required. For many struggling families, this serves as a welcome supplement to food they receive from local pantries.
Last year, the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, its partner organizations and volunteers delivered over 64,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need.
Next month’s food truck will take place on November 19 at the New Life Church of God in Christ, where in addition to produce and baked goods, we will also be distributing frozen turkeys. For more information on the food truck program, click here.
