September food truck serves over 60 families

GRAND RAPIDS September 18, 2015– The West Michigan labor community, partnered with Heart of West Michigan United Way, held its September food truck at Wood Brook Cathedral in Grand Rapids yesterday, wherefoodtruck1sep 63 families received food. The size of the average household this month was about three, which means more than 180 individuals received assistance.

Every month, west Michigan labor unions sponsor a Feeding America food truck to distribute 5,000 pounds of produce and baked goods to local families suffering from food insecurity. Union members, retirees and community members then volunteer their time to pass the food out at an area church.

foodtruck3sepThe food is distributed to anyone that shows up, no proof of income or need required. For many struggling families, this serves as a welcome supplement to food they receive from local pantries.

Last year, the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, its partner organizations and volunteers delivered over 64,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need.

Next month’s food truck will take place on October 15 at the Kent-Ionia Labor Center, 918 Benjamin NE in Grand Rapids. For more information on the food truck program, click here.
