Four Michigan counties lead the nation in new manufacturing jobs

GRAND RAPIDS July 16, 2015– A report came out this week detailing where the nation’s new manufacturing jobs are, and four Michigan counties made the top ten. The only other state with multiple counties in the top ten was California with three. A total of 2,746 counties were surveyed.

Wayne County (Detroit) lead the way nationally, with its 4,225 net new jobs (up 5.3% from 2013).

Another from Metro Detroit, Macomb County, was third on the list with 3,727 net new manufacturing jobs.

Kent County came in seventh nationally, with 2,492 net new jobs (up 4.2% from 2013), and Ottawa County came in 10th with 2,069 net new manufacturing jobs since 2013 (up 6.1%).

Ionia County added a net 348 new manufacturing jobs (up 8.9% from 2013), to place 191st on the list.

Muskegon County added a net 394 new manufacturing jobs (up 3.1%), to place 166th on the list.

The Michigan county that saw the greatest percentage drop in manufacturing jobs since 2013 was Cheboygan County with a 14.9% drop (a loss of 37 net jobs).

The Michigan county that saw the greatest percentage rise in manufacturing jobs was Oscoda County with 180% increase (254 net new jobs).

Nationally, the counties that saw the greatest loss in manufacturing jobs since 2013 were:

  • Los Angeles County, CA (Los Angeles): -4,820 jobs (down 1.3%)
  • Hoke County, NC (Fayetteville): -3,463 jobs (down 68.4%)
  • Cook County, IL (Chicago): -1,954 jobs (down 1%)
