Growing and strengthening west Michigan's middle class
GRAND RAPIDS May 28, 2015– The West Michigan labor community hosted their monthly food truck at Plymouth UCC in Grand Rapids and 79 families were served, providing food for more than 270 people.
Every month, west Michigan labor unions sponsor a Feeding America food truck to distribute 5,000 pounds of produce and baked goods to local families suffering from food insecurity. Union members, retirees and community members then volunteer their time to pass the food out at an area church.
The food is distributed to anyone that shows up, no proof of income or need required. For many struggling families, this serves as a welcome supplement to food they receive from local pantries.
Last year, the Kent-Ionia Labor Council, the Heart of West Michigan United Way, its partner organizations and volunteers delivered over 64,000 pounds of food to neighbors in need.
Next month’s food truck will take place on June 18 at Grace Christian Reformed Church, 100 Buckley St SE in Grand Rapids. For more information on the food truck program, click here.
